She Just Called Me What?

Jessica Bushor

A few weeks ago, I had an eye-opening moment. The shop was full of visitors, full of chatting, laughter, and smiles. As one of my new friends was leaving, she turned to me and called me something that no one has EVER called me before. I was absolutely stunned. Frozen. I wasn’t even sure how to respond.

She called me what?

I’m a creative. I’ve always known I was a little different, an outsider, a weirdo! I’ve always been a non-conformist. I’m a passionate creative who pours her heart and soul into everything. I wasn’t blessed with the talent of painting or drawing or sculpting. I don’t color inside the lines. I march to my own beat.

Wait………. She called me WHAT?

I have a fun, little Vintage Shop in the coolest, funky, little town where I can express my creative flair! Creative flair translates into staging furniture, arranging bookshelves according to color, and using items in a different context than what they are meant! I love being different. I love that my little shop looks nothing like any others that I’ve seen. I love connecting with like-minds. My customer base is slowly turning into my tribe. These people get me. THESE ARE MY PEOPLE!

But She called me an artist.

I have many jobs and probably even more titles…. mother, teacher, business owner, maid, taxi, wife, daughter, friend, accountant, cook, bookkeeper, motivator…. the list is endless!

But artist?

Y’all. There is just something about that word. Her comment blew me away. Why? I guess because I hold artists in such high regard. Could I actually be an artist? Just because I make globes look artsy by hanging them on the wall and ceiling. Or because I zentangled my hallway floor with Sharpie? ME? An artist? Is that possible? I know artists. I have friends that are artists. And let me tell you, they have serious talent.

Mind. Blown.

I’m thinking if held myself in high regard, maybe I wouldn’t have been so shocked! So here I go. Adding to the long list of titles. Artist. I guess maybe I am an artist after all. Yes. I am an artist.

It amazes me that this shocks you, because that’s how I totally see you. But we often don’t see our own gifts and talents as anything all that special, so I get that (a little).
So glad your funky, artsy little shop moved to our funky little town!

I agree with Phyllis! You are an artist! Your arrangements of “things” are just so perfect. You make them appeal to people. Certainly, that takes an artist to pull it off! Just enjoy! You are a real artist!

I think you’re definitely an artist. It takes a very creative mind to do all of the arranging and staging that you do. You have a one of a kind shop for sure, and you’re creative, artistic flair comes through in it. “Artist” ….. own it girl.
